SMI SURGICRYL® RAPID

Description

SURGICRYL RAPID

Manufacturer: SMI (Surgical Medical Instruments, Belgium)

  • Material: Synthetic
  • Type: Multifilament (braided)
  • Composition: Polyglactin 910 (copolymer of glycolide and lactide in a 9:1 ratio)
  • Coating: Polyglactin 370 and calcium stearate
  • Color: Violet
  • Tissue reaction: Minimal
  • Absorption: Absorbable (completely in 42-56 days by hydrolysis)
  • Tensile strength: 50% after 5 days, 0% after 10-14 days
  • Needle: Various configurations available (DR, DS, DSP - 3/8 circle)
  • USP: Various gauges available (6/0 - 0) – Length: 45-75 cm

Primary Indications (Dental Surgery):

  • Mucosal sutures with fast healing
  • Routine oral surgery procedures (simple extractions)
  • Superficial soft tissue closures
  • Gingival adaptations
  • Frenectomies (lip and tongue tie surgery)
  • Minor periodontal surgical procedures
  • Vestibuloplasties
  • Excision of benign oral lesions
  • Alveolar ridge surgery (superficial closures)
  • Peri-implant soft tissue surgery (uncomplicated cases)
  • Biopsy sites
  • Mucosal wound closures after flap formation (well-vascularized areas)
  • Pediatric oral surgery (fast absorption beneficial)

Further Applications: Episiotomy, obstetrics, superficial skin sutures, plastic surgery (superficial layers), gynecology, urology, ophthalmic surgery (conjunctiva), general fast-healing soft tissues

Advantages for Dentistry:

  • Very fast absorption – ideal for well-vascularized oral mucosa
  • Minimal suture presence – reduced foreign body sensation for patients
  • No suture removal required – optimized for routine procedures
  • Excellent knot security due to braided structure
  • Smooth tissue passage due to coating
  • Perfect for areas with rapid epithelialization (7-10 days)
  • Reduced treatment time – no follow-up appointments for suture removal
  • Particularly patient-friendly – ideal for anxious patients
  • Minimal plaque accumulation due to fast absorption
  • Excellent handling – easy to knot even with gloves
  • Violet color for optimal intraoperative visibility
  • Biocompatible – minimal inflammatory reaction
  • Cost-effective for standard procedures

Contraindications:

  • Tissues with slow wound healing (>14 days until epithelialization)
  • Situations requiring prolonged suture support
  • Fascia or aponeurosis closures
  • Heavily loaded sutures under tension
  • Compromised wound healing (uncontrolled diabetes, immunosuppression)
  • Patients with known hypersensitivity to polyglactin
  • Complex periodontal surgical reconstructions
  • Bone surgery or osteotomies (insufficient stabilization duration)
  • Implant surgery with augmentation (requires longer support)
  • Infected or contaminated wounds
  • Large flap operations with delayed healing
  • Cardiovascular or neurological tissue
  • Areas with poor vascularization

Special Features: SURGICRYL RAPID is the suture material of choice for routine oral surgery procedures where rapid epithelialization is expected. The extremely short absorption time (complete loss of tensile strength after 10-14 days) makes it ideal for well-vascularized oral mucosa, which typically shows primary wound healing within 7-10 days. After epithelialization is complete, no bothersome suture material remains, which maximizes patient comfort and minimizes the risk of plaque accumulation or tissue irritation.

Important Note: Due to its very fast absorption, SURGICRYL RAPID is not suitable for procedures where wound support is required beyond 14 days. For complex regenerative procedures, augmentations, or areas with limited vascularization, suture materials with a longer absorption time (e.g., SURGICRYL PGA or SURGICRYL MONOFAST) should be preferred.

Technical Notes: SURGICRYL RAPID is excellent for continuous suturing techniques and mattress suture variations in mucosal surgery. The braided structure offers excellent knot security even in moist conditions. Recommended knotting technique: Surgeon's knot + 2-3 single knots.

Ideal for: Practices with high patient volume, pediatric oral surgery, mobile treatment units, situations where follow-up appointments are difficult to realize, patients with limited compliance.
